Leaders of Florida's medical device industry gather this coming week in St. Petersburg for the 10th anniversary of the Florida Medical Manufacturers Consortium. State lawmakers agreed to a sales tax exemption on manufacturing equipment, a win that medical device makers and others say will help keep Florida's modest base of manufacturing more competitive with other states and countries. New data from University of Florida's Sid Martin Biotechnology incubator shows that Florida's life science sector continues to grow at a faster pace than the nation's. Biotech deals grew by 27 percent in 2012, to 19 deals from 15 in the previous year, and venture capital dollars rose to $103.5 million, a 19 percent increase over 2011. (Read More)

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded funds to several Florida nonprofits to establish Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers. Community Health Centers Alliance in St. Petersburg will receive $10.9 million, Univeristy of Central Florida will receive $7.6 millio,, and University of South Florida was awarded $5.8 million.
